Can Bed Rails Prevent Falls? Over twelve million people from all around the world fall each and every year. Fall prevention should be a high priority if you are over sixty. Fall related injuries can be very serious and can lead to death. Breaking your hip is a very common injury when falling. Once you break your hip you will need a long time in physical therapy. you will also need expensive and painful surgery to repair your broken hip.

Another result of falling can be the lose of your independent and freedom. If you had mobility before you may also have much more limited mobility from now on after your injury. You will most likely have to have someone care for you after you fall. Another possibility is you will have to be transferred to a nursing home if you cannot take care of your self,and do not have a family member or caretaker to to care for you in your home.

Fall Prevention Tips

With proper precautions taken falls can be prevented. A good way to start is to observe your home and remove obstacle in the way of getting to the bathroom, fridge,and other areas that you access frequently. Avoid getting up when your room is dark. Of course you may need to use the bathroom at night so the solution to this is to have a light close to your bed side. A light that claps on can also a good great idea to avoid having to find the light switch in the dark.

Bed rails are a great tool to help you get up late at night or during the day. Using bed rails can also help you get into your wheel chair if you use one. Bed rails can also give users that have stability problems to get up in out of bed without meeting assistant that they would normally need.

Bathroom Safety Tips

Installing grab bars in your bathroom can greatly improve your safety when getting in and out of the tub. Also grab bars can help you to get on and off your toilet when installed next to it.

Avoid using slippery tile in your bathroom. Do not wax your bathroom floor either as this can lead to falls. A throw rug or a rug that moves easily is not a good idea in your bathroom, instead consider buying some kind of slip resistant flooring or slip resistant floor plates.

Some experts suggests using a stool or some kind of chair when taking a shower to help support you when your washing. Having your soap on a rope during your shower can also reduce slip and falls when the soap slips from your hands.

Proper lighting should also be addressed when improving your bathroom for fall safety. If you can not see well then you have a greater risk of having an accident that can be prevented if your bathroom is properly lit.

Considering Your Options

Carefully consider your option in your own home setup. You want to make it as easy as possible to get to point B from point A. So if you want to get to your bathroom from your bed then you want to make sure every obstacle that can be remove isn't in your way. Consider also buying bed rails to get in and out of your bed, and grab bars for your bathroom.
